Salzburger Land’s annual Harvest Festival has been in full swing since the end of August and continues through to October 27, 2013. Throughout the two-month Austrian autumn festivities, over 70 villages and towns (including the city of Salzburg) host more than 2,000 events and activities!
In traditional style, celebrations highlight the local farmers’ bounty through homemade feasts, music, dance, parades, market fairs, and customary ceremonies, such as the return of the livestock from the mountains. Excursions, such as biking, horseback riding and especially walking and hiking amidst a gorgeous autumn landscape, are also an important part of the annual festivities; and this year’s theme—“Healthy Harvest Festival”—showcases the value of wholesome dining after exercising in the great outdoors. During the festival, numerous tourist organisations, hotels and companies offer guided walks and hikes throughout Salzburger Land, in regions such as Wagrain-Kleinarl, the Salzburg Sportwelt and Lungau. You can also enjoy the Harvest Festival in many other ways while on foot. Some events feature walking from mountain hut to mountain hut in the company of folk musicians as part of a traditional Almroas.
